How to make a Princess Elsa cape no sew

Popular Halloween costumes for this year will include those characters from Disney’s hit animated movie, Frozen: Princess Elsa, her sister Princess Anna, Kristoff the outdoorsman, Olaf, Sven the reindeer and Hans the handsome royal. Instead of purchasing the typical and costly Disney costume, be unique and build your own Disney Princess Elsa Cape.
Queen Elsa of Arendelle, also known as The Snow Queen, is the older sister of Princess Anna and was next in line for Arendelle's throne until her powers over ice and snow led her to become the famous Snow Queen. To make the fairy princess cape for everyday play or a Halloween costume for girls, supplies needed include:

1. 25 yard roll turquoise glitter tulle
2. Velcro
3. Hot glue
4. Scissors

Once the supplies are gathered, create the homemade costume following these steps:

1. To determine the amount of
tulle needed, select a piece that is at least 18” wide to fit around the child’s neck. Then, measure the child from shoulder to toe and add approximately 25” for the train of the cape.

2. Cut the fabric to length, then fold the piece of fabric in half.

3. Put a faint mark about 25” from the end of the fabric. This is the point to where the train of the cape begins

4. With the fabric folded, cut upwards to the 25” marking so that the train of the cape is slightly curved. One could be very scientific with a cut paper pattern, but the curved pattern need not be perfect as the cape will be “flowing” anyway

5. For the neck of the cape, fold the piece of fabric in half and lay half of a plate over the corner. Cut this rounded edge to create the neck opening.

6. On each side of the neck opening, attach the sticky Velcro pieces for closure. These pieces can be decorated with buttons, sequin, patches, etc

7. If desired, you can burn the edges of the cape to keep it from fraying, but this is not necessary

8. For extra decoration, add snowflakes to the bottom of the cape. Create your own by using a snowflake pattern or simply paint the snowflakes using sparkle fabric paint.

As additional accessories, the child can carry one of the stuffed plush animals from the Disney hit movie, Frozen or make a Queen Elsa crown out of paper or craft foam using the pattern located:

How to make Dr. Seuss Thing 1 and Thing 2 Halloween costumes

Popular Halloween costumes for couples and groups include those Thing characters from the Dr. Seuss book, The Cat in the Hat. Thing One and Thing Two were released from the box that the cat brought in. The things caused mischief in the house by bumping into walls and knocking everything down in their path. Eventually, the things were caught with a net and put back in the box. Making these Halloween costumes is simple and affordable for children and adults alike. Supplies needed include:

To make the hair for the Thing 1 and Thing 2 (and other Things for a group), hot glue the

Cut out the Thing templates and hot glue the paper to the front of the shirt. Dress the child in shirt, pants, mittens and blue cap.

For a more girly Thing, one can make a tutu out of elastic and tulle (red, white and/or blue). See

To create the Cookie Monster character, start by laying the blue feather boa across the top of the hood. Then, carefully pin the boa to the outside of the hood, concealing the safety pin under the boa and poking the pin through the rope of the boa. Pin liberally, especially around the face to keep the feathers from falling in front the face. Pin the entire boa to the outside of the hood. Use a circular shape from a soup can or bottle to trace two circles on to black felt. Cut out the circles and glue them on to the foam balls. Glue the foam balls to the top of the hood (do not glue to feathers).

Dress in black sweatpants, black shoes, character tee. Put on hooded jacket and lift hood up. For the trick or treat candy bag, carry a reusable canvas bag and write "Cookies" on the outside.

To accessorize the costume even more, add a bag of cookies.

How to make a railroad crossing Halloween costume

railroad halloween costume costumes idea train

The complete
costume came together fairly quickly. Supplies needed include:

1. White foam posterboard (for crossing and crossing bar)
2. Two battery operated
tap lights
3. Black foam
4. Scissors, hot glue
5.
White and black felt or fleece
6.
Dark gray or black sweatsuit
7. Red tape
8.
Black baseball cap
9. Thick Styrofoam
10.
2” Letter stickers
11. Elastic
12. Staple gun
13.
Red acrylic paint
14.
Two red reflectors

To make the crossing sign, use the white foam poster board cut to size and then add letter stickers on each piece. Cross the foam pieces and glue with a hot glue gun. Then, cut a square piece of thick Styrofoam and clue one side of the foam piece to the baseball cap, the other side to the crossing you just made.

For the sweatshirt, I used white fleece and took it to a screen printer to have them print “Do not stop on tracks” on it. The screen printer suggested fleece instead of felt since the felt could melt in the process. I then cut strips of black fleece to outline the screen printed fabric so it looks like a “sign”.

For the arm crossing, cut another piece of white foam board to fit the length of the child’s arm. Add red tape slightly at an angle throughout the length of the foam board. Hot glue the red reflector lights to the back of the foam board. Then, staple elastic to the back side of this piece so the child’s arm could slip in easily.

For the lights, disassemble the tap lights so you have just the covers. Paint the covers using red acrylic paint. Cut two large circles out of the black foam (I used a large can of coffee as a stencil to make the circles perfectly round). Cut two smaller half circles to use as the “covers” for the lights. Once the tap light covers are dry, assemble the covers and be sure to include the batteries! Then, glue the large round circles to the back of each light. Then, place the ½ circle pieces on top of each light as a “cover”. Once the lights were complete, I attached the lights to a belt using elastic and staples. The belt made dressing up even easier!
